Eat out in York

Where it all began

Head Chef and Proprietor Silvano Scanu has been in the catering business for over 40 years. Originating from a small village on the island of Sardinia, Silvano left home at the age of 15 to undertake a catering course in the North of Italy. Having excelled in his training, Silvano went on to work in some of Italy's largest and most prestigious hotels, working as Executive Chef managing teams of up to 75 chefs!

At the age of 27, Silvano and his brother Gianni moved to England opting to work in the cities of Leeds and York. Silvano became the Head Chef at Bibis in York , then at La Terrazza in Leeds. Gianni worked as Head Chef at Bibis, Leeds.

Earning a reputation

In 1980, Silvano and his brother Gianni were head-hunted by the Trust House Forte company to return to Italy to manage one of the largest hotels in Sicily. Silvano became the Executive Chef with his brother Gianni being second in command. The hotel has 1500 covers and Silvano was responsible for organising all the food, plus banquets and wedding receptions.

At the end of 1980, the brothers returned to York. Silvano now had a family of his own and at this point decided to open his first restaurant in 1981. Situated in the village of Bishopthorpe on the outskirts of York, The Birdcage, a traditional Italian restaurant proved extremely popular. Silvano recalls occasions where coach loads of customers from outside York would travel to the restaurant to sample his cuisine.

The making of Silvano's

In 1984, Silvano opened his first Pizzeria style restaurant aptly named Silvano's in York City Centre. Based upon its success a second Silvano's was opened in Scunthorpe and run by Silvano's brother Gianni.

In 1990, Silvano decided to sell the original two Silvano's to move to bigger premises. Situated next to the Grand Opera House in York, the third Silvano's soon became extremely popular with both locals, tourists, race-goers, theatre goers and many a famous actor!

Silvano decided to sell his York restaurant in 2008. Following a 6 month break he decided that the time was right for a new challenge. He wanted to return to the place where his career first began- the city of Leeds which has always held a special place in his heart. In early 2009, he bought Da Silvano's formerly known as Luigi's in Horsforth and the rest is history.

Present day

The restaurant was refurbished in early 2010 and work is soon to be undertaken on a new state of the art kitchen and an extension of the restaurant which will allow for more covers.
